Indeed, western thought has been reshaped. What may be termed "western thought" has been transformed into the same narrow distortion of culture that Yen Fu had unleashed upon China, which distortion had shaped the thoughts of the founders of the Communist Party and Mao Zedong whose ideological axioms had brought death to countless millions of people. When Sun Yat Sen finally exposed the British fraud that Yen Fu had been educated for, the unfolding truth broke the back of the British Empire's stranglehold over China. The same breakthrough needs to occur again in the West and the world. Without it, there exists no moral base upon which to build a constitutional democracy that is open in its structure, but still protects; that works as a development platform, but inhibits the abuses of the freedoms it provides. A functional democracy in which human rights are guaranteed - including the economic human rights that are fundamental to life, liberty, and happiness - cannot be founded on fictions, mythologies, and distortions of culture.
What Yen Fu had achieved with his translations of the British empiricists and Social Darwinists, has been re-achieved in the modern West by the Empire's near total ownership of the world's media. The narrow minded concepts (distortions of what really is western thought), are so effective in hiding the truth that hardly anyone is privileged, anymore, like Dr. Sun Yat Sen was privileged, to learn about the republican principles that stand behind the works of the great pioneers of the American System of political economy: the Alexander Hamiltons, the Henry Careys, and the Philadelphia Interests.
Who knows about them, or even cares about the real history of the West? Who is aware of its culture in humanist tradition; in building, creating, protecting, and uplifting the world; strengthening morality, justice, honor? Hardly anyone. People know about the ideology of Locke, if not by name - the the founder of the Bank of England, who saw truth in wealth and power stolen from society at large. People also know about the Hobbes style Enlightenment empiricist ideology, perhaps not under this title, but by its effect, namely that political will can override fundamental principles and create its own reality. This type of 'enlightenment' counters all true enlightened thought based on discovery, scientific understanding, and technologies based on discovered realities.
The Hobbes style of enlightenment, unfortunately, has become predominant in modern thought, especially in the financial arena where the mythical belief prevails that it is possible to create reality at will which is overriding fundamental realities. This cannot really be done. Thus, founded on mysticism, the world-financial system is collapsing as no fundamental principles support its assumptions. Its bubble is about to pop. In contrast, the Chinese nation is advancing away from mysticism, towards a model of economy based on universal principle. On this platform, it is developing an infinite economy by which the whole of society is intended to become enriched.
The currently unfolding world-financial crisis - indeed, the impending disintegration of the entire system - cannot be correctly understood, without an understanding of the forces behind it, politically and philosophically. If it becomes possible for ideological mysticism to be stripped away, then, China and the USA will naturally unite as both nations share a common heritage and background that is deeply grounded in proven fundamental principles. When mysticism is stripped away, the remainder will become recognized, namely that the development of China proceeds on the American Systems model, which is rooted in the Golden Renaissance and the earlier renaissance centered on the Greek Classical civilization.
Indeed, Plato and Confucius are contemporaries. There unfolded a profound renaissance in China at about the same time that the first cultural renaissance unfolded in the West. The Greek Classical Period coincided with the birth of Confucian culture in China. Also their opposite trends in Aristotelian and Legalist/Taoist thinking developed at approximately the same time. The two opposing thought models, which developed simultaneously in China and in the West, have dominated human culture ever since. Both, China and the West, have experienced the pain and chaos they brought, resulting from ideologies that were in more modern times called "enlightenment" and "empiricist" thinking. Both, China and the West, have also experienced the enormously enriching effect of reality oriented thinking: the Platonic and Christian background in western culture, and its parallel in the Confucian background in Chinese culture.
